Wind Vanes

A Wind Vane is a mechanical device which freely rotates to show the direction of the wind. The output is generally analogue but digital versions are also available. Good quality vanes are well balanced, respond well even at low wind speeds and have a small, well-defined dead band - The deadband refers to the ill-defined output as the wind direction changes from 360 to 0 degrees.

NRG 200P
WMI offers NRG windvanes for cost-sensitive projects. The threshold response of these vanes is 1 m/s and the deadband varies from 4 to 8 degrees.

The thermoplastic and stainless steel components resist corrosion and contribute to a high strength-to-weight ratio.

The vane is directly connected to a precision conductive plastic potentiometer located in the main body. An analogue voltage output directly proportional to the wind direction is produced when a constant DC excitation voltage is applied to the potentiometer.

Vector 200P
Higher value projects normally demand the improved accuracy, longer life and smaller dead-band of a Vector Instruments wind vane. The threshold response of these vanes is 0.6 m/s and the deadband is only 3.5 degrees.

Construction from anodised aluminium alloys and stainless steels for exposed parts. Combined with a hard plastic (upper) bearing and precision ball-races, the result is an instrument suitable for continuous exposure to the weather, with a long service interval.
