Wind Mast Installation

We have experienced teams, skilled at installing wind monitoring met masts and equipment to the highest standards.

Mast or LIDAR, lattice or tilt-up, 10m or 180m, on accessible or inaccessible terrain, we have done it before. Wind Measurement International specify, supply and install wind monitoring equipment using industry standard equipment (Campbell Scientific, Second Wind, Vector Instruments, ZephIR, Nexgen Hi masts, Lattice masts).

WMI's fully trained installation teams ensure reliable, trouble-free installations in harsh environments using appropriate certificated testing equipment. Full method statements, risk assessments, indemnity and liability insurance policies are available on request.

Calling on a large pool of over 150 installers, WMI prides itself on a rapid response to any request.

From small-scale private wind turbine projects to large wind farm developers, we provide a wide range of wind monitoring products to suit all applications. By carefully matching the right wind monitoring equipment, to the correct met mast, we are confident that we have the best solution for your wind site. Being an independent installer, we can install any met mast that you have or wish to purchase to tight timescales.

Instrumentation

Instrumentation is installed to mm accuracy and angular errors below 1 degree are maintained. Our installation report fully defines the instrumentation in terms of serial number, height, orientation and boom geometry. Angles are measure using a digital inclinometer with bi-axis sensor which decouples mast inclination to horizontal and boom/instrument angle.

Full load control

Wind Measurement International has developed systems to ensure full load path control through out the lift: The lifting winches prevent movement away from the winch point, but additional safety measures are required to ensure the combination of gin pole weight and wind gusts do not produce an uncontrolled movement towards the winch point.

"Eyes" are swaged onto the rear guys to allow full load control of the met mast as it nears vertical. A twin winch system is used to provide additional safety levels. The methodology has been developed by Wind Measurement International to improve upon the recommended safety procedures of standard hi mast installations.

Drive-in, dig-in, rock pin or concrete foundation ground anchor solutions are available to match your needs.

Met Masts

Guys are commonly secured using either Crosby wire rope grips with the aid of a calibrated torque wrench. Wire rope grips are one of the weakest parts of a mast installation and anchor points must be secured against livestock using them as scratching points. For more robust installations a cropped chain and shackle solution avoids the need for rope grips.

Guy wire tensions

Mast Straightening

Mast straightening and guy wire tensioning is the final stage of a WMI installation. In order to prevent mast overloading or excessive movement it is important to ensure the correct tension in all guy wires. WMI has developed a tensioning process to maintain safety levels and minimise the time required, so keeping installation costs down. All guy wire tensions are checked with a calibrated aviation industry standard tensionmeter.
